CO2 Transcritical Refrigeration Maintenance Training Program
City Facilities Management (City) and Natural Refrigerants Company (CA Group) worked together to create and rollout national CO2 Transcritical Refrigeration Maintenance Training, providing technicians with theoretical and hands-on experience in servicing and maintaining supermarket transcritical refrigeration systems.
The training has helped City refrigeration technicians prepare for the future of work with next-generation technology.
The Challenge
The rapid onset of transcritical refrigeration systems installed in Australian supermarkets resulted in a significant need for targeted training on their service and maintenance. With 170+ City technicians located across every state and territory, it was impractical for them to travel to a central location due to downtime impacting their availability for work.
Our Approach
City Facilities Management (City) and Natural Refrigerants Company (CA Group) worked together to create and rollout national Transcritical Refrigeration Training, providing technicians with theoretical and hands-on experience in servicing and maintaining supermarket transcritical refrigeration systems.
A scaled-down version of a supermarket system was designed and developed within a mobile shipping container to allow it to be transported around the country. The mobile training pod contained a parallel compression compound transcritical, gas cooler, freezer room and medium temperature room. It was designed to allow for up to eight technicians to work in a small group environment for course delivery.
A targeted course comprising theoretical and hands-on training covering operation and safety aspects was devised and implemented. The course included theoretical and practical elements to instil confidence in their technical ability and helped to increase safety awareness and knowledge and improve confidence levels for technicians and company/end users.
The design of the course and pod was in coordination between City, CA Group and Advansor.
Outcomes
25 training sessions were held across Victoria, South Australia, WA, NSW and Queensland.
The mobile training pod ensured easy access to training, reducing downtime per technician by ~50%.
Less travel resulted in lower emissions reducing scope 3 Co2e.
Increased safety awareness and knowledge improved confidence levels of technicians and end users
Our CO2 Transcritical Refrigeration Maintenance Training Program was recognised by AIRAH and the FMA.
